Medicine is a complex practice and requires organized structuring in order to be useful. For this reason, it was broken into several sub parts which allowed dealing with things on a more specialized basis promising higher efficiency and durability. When looking for a medical checkup, there are a set of steps that should be followed in order to ensure that everything goes according to plans and get the desired result.

To start with, the first point of contact is a primary care physician. He is someone who has undergone training in all major areas dealing in medicine. This enables to conduct a complete checkup and identify any problems if existent. Such doctors are widely available and most of us know them in the form of family doctors. While their training is general, some belonging to this type of doctors may specialize in internal medicine, gynecology, family medicine etc.

If the ailment is of a level that he can help resolve, he would prescribe relevant medicines and look after the healing process. In such a case, he would be the one and only point of contact. However, if the problem is complex and cannot be dealt with by him, he would refer you to a more specialized doctor. Depending upon area of trouble, the specialized doctor can be anyone some examples of which include neurologists, radiologists, osteopaths, obstetricians etc.

Specialized doctors come to be known so after they complete their Masters in a field. The field that they choose is the one they become masters in. It can also be called as advanced training wherein they are brought to terms with all intricacies involved with the stream. While they would know everything about their stream, one cannot expect them to know in detail about other streams. They become more focused, narrowed and concentrated; apt for treating special cases and performing surgeries.

If the problem is one which cannot wait i.e. something that requires immediate medical attention for example an accident patient suffering from bruises, burns etc. - immediate care physicians are the one to look for. They have the capability to treat all non-emergency cases which usually comprise of the walk in cases. In such cases, waiting for an appointment with the family doctor would be foolish and may lead to septic which may become complicated later.

Cases exist wherein patients require medical attention at their home plainly because it is not possible for them to travel to the hospital. These include the aged or the physically disabled; people who do not require hospitalization but at the same time cannot be left free to move. Such services are provided by registered nursing professionals who may be sponsored by one of many funding institutions. Services included under this bracket include physical therapy, nursing services etc.

Apart from these broad classifications, there are other types of doctors for various other types of medical services. Keeping the scientific treatments aside, there is another class which contains different types of doctors with an aim to resolve ailments with the help of spiritual, mental and physical support.
